MEG'S OTHER FAMILY

Not enough can be said about Meg's friends at her work, and how they have come
through for her, as only real friends can, in her time of need.

Meg is a Systems Engineer and Manager at Lockheed Martin, attached to their Space
Systems Division, which is headquartered in Denver.  Prior to moving to Colorado
nearly ten years ago, Meg also worked for LM in Sunnyvale, California, where she
worked in satellite operations.

Since moving to Colorado, she has worked at the Boulder Campus and most recently at Waterton Park in Littleton.

On the night of the accident, she  was honored at a going-away party at the Waterton Campus as she  prepared, that week, to return to the LM group at Boulder.  After a year and a half at Waterton, the transfer back to Boulder represented a new challenge and a significantly shorter commute from Longmont.

On that night, it was her manager and friend Dave Daniels and his wife Linda that rushed to the hospital and stayed with Meg in the Emergency Room.  Since then, the support and compassion and caring has only increased as word was spread throughout Meg's group and the LM company.
From the very start, Meg's friends and colleagues have exhibited, both as individuals and as a group, the greatest collective outpouring of caring and true friendship that our family has ever seen.

Meg's friends at Lockheed Martin have gone way beyond the normal bounds and duties that most would consider typical for work colleagues.  One friend has temporarily given the visiting Fitzmayer Family a car to use during their months in Colorado.  Another has teamed up with Meg's neighbor Cara to care for Meg's pets and take care of her home in Longmont during the time she is away at Craig.  Still another who lives close to Craig Hospital has offered a portion of her house to the Fitzmayers to use during their time away from home.  One has provided a contact for legal advice, while others are helping the family search for a new home for Meg.  And the good deeds, gifts, and caring go on an on.

Yes, that is Meg's head on the water skier.

Meg's friends and colleagues are also fund
raising for her, using their creativity, drive,
and sometimes their own money resources
to help lessen the burden and make others
aware of what a life altering event this has been.  A bake sale, a golf tournament, a
silent auction, "SCI Aware" bracelets--these
are just some of the things that Meg's
friends have done to raise money.  And more
is to come no doubt.

Meg truly is blessed to have so many friends,
so many good, solid, helping, stand-by-you
friends.
Thank you so much for all you've done.

Not enough can be said either about the contribution to Meg's recovery that visitors have made.  From the very beginning, when we were still at Longmont United, the doctors and nurses were commenting on the high number of visitors Meg had, and nearly all of these were friends from Lockheed Martin and work.  And the visits didn't decrease at all when we moved to Craig Hospital; in fact, they increased.  And likewise, the physician and nursing staff at Craig have also noted the number of visitors and the positive effect it has on Meg.

Some visitors have included Lockheed Martin colleagues and friends who were also one-time SCI patients and "graduates" of Craig Hospital.  From these visits and the long discussions that ensue, Meg and her family have learned a great deal about living with a spinal cord injury--physically, mentally, spiritually, and the ins and outs of working with insurance companies and hospital billing departments to reduce her personal portion of the medical costs. Most importantly, Meg has learned from these former patient visitors about the path ahead and what its going to take to get back to work and back to life.
Getting back to work and back to the things that make her happy will be Life's next big milestone for Meg.  Seeing and talking with friends who have already traveled this challenging road has been inspiring like nothing else.
